DÁMASO ALONSO
II. Unyielding,
divine.
How lovely you are, freedom. There is no
match for you. What? Give me torment.
Brighter it shines and in purer firmament
freedom in torment purified.
Must I not scream? Am I gagged?
Come: gag my thoughts if you may.
Scream is not waves vibrating in the wind:
scream is human consciousness being set free.
How lovely you are, freedom. God himself
saw you shine, as he faced the first abyss,
on his chest, one lonely star.
He took in his hand one spark from
the burning volcano. And ignited you in my forehead,
free flame of God, beautiful freedom.
